13/01/18 Lisburn Distillery 1 v Tobermore United 1 Match Report
Bluefin Premier Intermediate League
Lisburn Distillery 1 v Tobermore 1
Distillery had a lot to prove going into yesterday’s game, after losing three nil to Tobermore earlier in the year with the match also providing them with a chance for the Whites to close the gap on Dundela and Queens.
Distillery started the game looking like they were going to close the gap and come away with a result, coming close to scoring on the 12th minute through Gary Workman, who got the Whites first shot on target.
And it was Distillery who broke the deadlock first through Allan McMurtry who converted a penalty on the 31st minute, after Timmy Clarke got taken down in the box by the Tobermore goalkeeper, Andrew Finlay.
Tobermore went down to ten men shortly after Distillery went one up, as Dean Brown raised his hands towards Barry Moore after being awarded a freekick outside the Distillery box.
The ten men of Tobermore however continued to battle and almost got one back just before the half came to a close, as Conor Kearns’ free kick went narrowly wide of the mark.
Distillery had two final attacks before the end of the half, both of which they were unable to convert, the first of which came on the 45th minute as Adam Wright found Workman on the right wing with a lofted ball, Workman cut inside the box beating the defender giving himself space for the shot, which he curled just the wrong side of the post.
The Whites final attempt of the half came in the first minute of injury time as Clarke crossed the ball for Adam Wright, who wasn’t able to get enough power on the header, which made it an easy save for the keeper.
Distillery had the first chance in the second half to go on top through Matthew Ferguson who was sent through on goal as Kearns slipped, allowing Ferguson one on one with the keeper, however, he dragged the shot wide, missing the chance to take the lead.
Ferguson then missed another chance soon after on the 53rd minute as Workman beat his man to get the ball into the box, his cross was pin point and found the head of Ferguson who was unmarked and in acres of space, his header was hard and low into the ground bouncing up off the ground and over the bar, another chance missed by the striker, who would have relished in these chances earlier in the season.
Tobermore capitalised on Ferguson’s miss and equalled the score on the 59th minute through Aidan McCauly’s powerful free kick which goalkeeper, Jonah Nicholl, was able to get a hand to, but was not able to stop it from going in to the top left hand corner of the net.
Distillery bombarded the Tobermore defence for the remaining minutes coming close to going ahead with Aaron Harris who tried to chip the keeper on the 64th minute, but was unable to get his effort on target and the Whites were unable to get the winner as the game ended one all this despite the fact that the visitors had gone down to nine men following a late injury with all substitutes already being used.
