Match report 0 Lisburn Distillery 1 v Tobermore United 2 24th Sept 2022
An unusually early start time of 1:00 Pm (due to a NI International game being played later that day) seemed to show in this one as both sets of players struggled to get going in the early stages of the game. Indeed it took over 12 minutes for the game to see its first effort on target with Matty Swann’s effort from out wide easily gathered by the visiting goalkeeper Morgan Moore.
Two minutes later saw Tobermore’s first real effort of the day as Ryan Whiteside tested home keeper Ethan Carry from distance with a long range effort which the Whites keeper had to parry to safety.
Distillery then had a great chance to take the lead as the Tobermore defence failed to clear the ball and a well weighted pass found Carson Elliott in a great position only 12 yards from goal only for the normally reliable forward to scuff his effort with the chance eventually cleared.
After this it was the visitors who started to gain control of the game with only the woodwork and some good fortune preventing Martin, Rowe and McCallister putting them into the lead.
It did appear however that it was only a matter of time before the breakthrough came and indeed it eventually did on 42 minutes as the home defence failed to clear a corner and when the ball was headed back into the box, Rhys O’Mullan was on hand to head over the top of the advancing Distillery ‘keeper Carry.
Second half saw the Whites haul themselves back into the game on 54 minutes, this time Tobermore failing to clear a corner with Swann’s looping header at the back post dropping over all of the visiting defence and ending off in the net although the referee did deem that the final touch was by the visitors Stuart Forrest.
At this stage it looked like the Whites might be able to go on and win the game however on 66 minutes the visitors were to retake the lead. A great through ball to Declan Martin set the tall striker on his way from just inside the Distillery half and despite calls of offside from the home defence and an attempted block from Whites keeper Carry, he was able to keep his composure and drill the ball home through the legs of the advancing keeper.
After this chances were once again at a premium although Tobermore skipper Tiarnan Rafferty and Distillery substitute Fra McGuiness could both have done better with late efforts in the game.
