Tobermore United 0 v Lisburn Distillery 1
Distillery started the game strongly coming close to scoring in the 2nd minute as Mikey Withers broke with the ball from the halfway line and drove with it in to Tobermore’s box with only a strong tackle preventing him getting away his shot.
On a difficult surface Tobermore then had a chance of their own in the 10th minute as Thomas Elder played in Gary Keane down the right wing, Keane ran towards the corner before crossing it along the ground in front of goal but thankfully for the Whites nobody got on the end of it and the ball went out of play.
Peter Spratt had a great chance to make it one nil to Tobermore in the 13th minute as a cross in to the box from Ryan Whiteside, was won in the air by Spratt, who somehow headed wide of the goal.
A minute after this miss, The Whites had a strong shout for a penalty as Withers was brought down in the box, however, the referee waved for Withers to get back to his feet and the play continued.
Distillery had another chance in the 18th minute as Aaron Harris picked the ball up deep in the centre of Tobermore’s half and played Withers through in to the box where he found himself one on one with the keeper Bednarz who charged out of his goal closing down Withers quickly and stopping the shot.
Withers was a constant threat and was involved in another chance for Distillery in the 24th minute as a deep ball was played towards the back post from Paul Young towards him, he won the header, which he directed back across the goal, but it was no problem for the Tobermore keeper, who was able to make a comfortable catch.
26 minutes in Tobernore had a chance of their own two minutes later as defender Paul Keane played a long ball forward to the feet of Elder who had a shot from outside the box, which went well over the bar.
The Whites then had a fortunate escape as in the 29th minute as Peter Duffin’s free-kick somehow rattled off the right post and was cleared away from danger by the visiting defence.
Withers was involved in the action yet again in the 36th minute as a free kick was delivered in to the box and was won in the air by a Tobermore defender, whose attempted clearance saw the ball hit in to the back of Chris Getty and the ball fell for Withers on the volley, a well struck effort but one which was well saved by the home keeper Bednarz who pawed it out for a corner.
No goals then at the break however Tobermore’s Duffin looked increasingly dangerous coming close to scoring again in the 52nd minute as the ball fell for him in the Distillery box, but his shot was straight at keeper, Jonah Nicholl, who closed him down well.
Eventually the deadlock was broken and it was The Whites who got the ball in to the back of the net in the 59th minute as James Wright delivered a free kick into the Tobermore box, towards the front post were Withers was there to flick the ball with his head past the keeper to make it one nil to Distillery.
After this the Whites closed up shop and were able to hold off for the remainder of the game, keeping their defence tight as Tobermore began to apply more pressure in an attempt to get an equaliser, coming close to getting it in the last minute of the game after substitute Jon McKee’s shot was cleared off the line by Getty, resulting in Distillery getting the three points as the ref blew the final whistle.
