Match report 18/08/18 Banbridge Town 3 v Lisburn Distillery 1
18/08/2018 Banbridge Town 3 Lisburn Distillery 1
The Whites’ 2018-2019 Bluefin Premier Intermediate League got off to a disappointing start with a 3-1 defeat by Banbridge Town.
There will be few complaints from the visitors, the performance on the day simply not good enough to warrant the points. Banbridge dominated the opening period and a dangerous cross was whipped across the Lisburn Distillery goalmouth inside the opening minute.
Two minutes later Francis Dugan looked clear but a superb tackle from Daniel Devlin halted the Whites’ striker. After that, Banbridge posed all the threats, very much on the front foot and the break-through came from Stephen Acheson on 18 minutes. The visitors failed to clear, the ball was fired in from outside the area and Acheson turned it in.
There were a few feisty minutes in the opening period but the visitors were fortunate to come in at half-time just one goal down. After the break the Whites got into the game more and yet it took 50 minutes for Town keeper McErlean to be tested, the keeper fully behind Matthew Ferguson’s shot.
On the hour Ferguson had a half-chance but was just wide before the Whites made two changes in a bid to get back an equaliser on 63 minutes. But that impetus hadn’t started before a calamitous piece of defending saw Banbridge extend their lead inside a minute. A simple ball over the top fell into no-man’s land and whilst Barry Moore and Jonah Nicholl hesitated, Darren McGrath darted forward and squared the ball across goal to Stephen McCavitt who side-footed home.
Ferguson gave the Whites hope with 15 minutes to go when he headed home from a cross – his fourth in three games and a super header it was given the angle to beat McErlean.
But it was a false dawn, the game up four minutes later when Conor Downey netted Banbridge’s third after Nicholl and McCavitt collided following a right-wing cross and the substitute shot low past the bodies on the ground to seal the win.
Lisburn Distillery – Nicholl, McMurtry, Clarke (Swann 86), Moore, Byrne, Wright (Hislop 64), McCaw, Harris, Ferguson, Dugan, Young (Beta 64).
