Match Report – 24/04/18 Tobermore 1 v Lisburn Distillery 3
24/04/18 – Premier Intermediate League
Tobermore United 1 vs Lisburn Distillery 3
After a couple of successive defeats in the last two games, interestingly enough against the league’s top and bottom placed sides, Lisburn Distillery went into this game determined to get their season back on track and to ensure that they finished the season on a high.
After a fairly tame opening quarter of an hour the game eventually burst into life on the 17th minute when a poor back pass saw the Whites ‘ Matthew Ferguson pounce to intercept the ball before drilling it home past the advancing home keeper Andrew Finlay.
The goal gave the Whites the impetus they needed and one become two when, on 26 minutes, a superb through ball from defender Joe Reid fell perfectly into the path of midfielder Alan McMurtry. McMurtry, who had been moved into the midfield from his normal defensive duties before kick off, kept a very clam head driving into the box before completely fooling Tobermore defender Shannon Crooks by cutting inside the retreating defender before picking his spot and drilling home into the bottom corner of the net, a very cool finish indeed from the industrious midfielder.
Distillery were well in control by this point however, following a strange call from the referee, the hosts were awarded a way back into the game courtesy of a hotly disputed penalty. Initially the assistant referee had flagged for offside, the referee chose to overrule that decision and then as the ball fell into the box Hislop was adjudged to have fouled a Tobermore forward this despite Distillery ‘keeper Jonah Nicholl having been clearly pulled down in the build up to the incident. The penalty stood however and Conor Kearns was able co convert to give the hosts a lifeline going in at the break.
The two goal cushion however was restored on 53 minutes when Nick Beta broke down a Tobermore clearance before driving forward and then placing the ball neatly into the path of Ferguson and he in turn calmly swept the ball into the net over home keeper Finlay’s head from a good 20 yards out.
Tobermore battled back and saw good chances come and go for Paul Keane and substitute Neil Lamont but overall Distillery held firm and indeed had chances of their own to extend the lead through Mikey Withers who shot narrowly wide on 76 minutes and later on Gary Workman who blasted over when well placed on 89 minutes.
Overall then a much improved performance from Lisburn Distillery after the last couple of games and a result which keeps their promotion hopes, no matter how slight, still very much alive.
