Match Report 27/01/18 Dunloy FC 2 v Lisburn Distillery 3
27/01/18 – Match Intermediate Cup (Round 3) – Dunloy 2 Lisburn Distillery 3
Lisburn Distillery will now play Crumlin United in Round 4 of the Match Intermediate Cup following yesterday’s visit to McCamphill Park, Dunloy.
That fixture had looked a certainty with five minutes remaining, before Dunloy scored two goals inside two minutes to set up a tense, if unexpected, finale.
A strong wind swept directly down the length of the pitch and the Whites had it at their backs in the first-half. They should have gone ahead on 53 seconds but Matthew Ferguson headed wide. Five minutes later Gary Workman fired wide and the 13th minute proved unlucky when Nick Beta watched his shot rebound off the post.
Dunloy had their first clear opportunity on 33 minutes when Karl Fitzpatrick was well placed but could only shoot straight at Whites’ keeper Paddy Saunders. Five minutes later the Whites made a breakthrough, Beta coming in at the near-post to meet Andrew Simpson’s angled shot. And with two minutes to go the woodwork denied the Whites again whenever a corner clipped the face of the cross-bar before going out of play.
With Dunloy having the wind behind them in the second-half things would be different and whilst they dominated things territorially they had few clear cut opportunities, the Whites defending solidly when they had too.
But on 67 minutes they had a great chance to pull a goal back, Declan McGarry running in from wide left but again the shot was fired straight at Saunders who saved comfortably. And Dunloy paid the price inside two minutes. Beta headed wide on the Whites’ next attack before Workman, who was a great outlet on the right, sent in a super ball and Ferguson headed home to end his recent goal drought on 69 minutes. Paul Young then made it 3-0 on 73 minutes, coming in at the near post to head in Aaron Harris’ free kick.
And that was that – well not quite, as the Whites undid all the good work inside two somewhat farcical minutes. On 41 minutes Dunloy were awarded a free-kick, just under twenty-five yards out. There didn’t look to be any danger, but the visitors were caught out by the quick thinking of McGarry. As the Whites did little and waited for a whistle that never came, McGarry smashed the ball up and over the exposed Saunders into the goal.
It got worse for the Whites a minute later – Dunloy went forward from the re-start and Saunders miskicked as Fitzpatrick closed him down and the Dunloy forward rolled the ball into the empty goal.
That was the signal for Dunloy to throw men up top, keeper Sean Doherty taking a free-kick and going up for a corner in the dying seconds, but the Whites kept it together for some six minutes of added time, doing enough to secure victory.
