Match Report – Ards Rangers 1 v Lisburn Distillery 3
13/08/17 Steel and Sons Cup First Round
Ards Rangers F.C 1 v Lisburn Distillery 3
Lisburn Distillery started their season off strong in their first competitive game against Ards Rangers in the Steel and Sons Cup.
The Whites started off the game as the stronger team, winning a free kick on the first minute which was hit by Workman, forcing the save.
In the opening minutes Distillery appeared to be the stronger side, with McCaw releasing a shot from distance on the 11th minute which narrowly went wide.
Distillery kept applying the pressure and were eventually rewarded, their first goal coming late on in the first half when McCaw was taken down in an off the ball incident in the box to win the Whites a penalty which was duly converted by Matthew Ferguson, who placed the ball in the bottom right corner of the net to put Distillery in the lead.
We didn’t have to wait long for Distillery to further their lead through Nick Beta, who cut in from the right side of the box beating his man and hammering the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net early in the second half.
The Whites continued to create chances one on the 56th minute it seemed easier to score than miss as Aaron Harris played a ball over the Ards defence into the path of Ferguson who controlled the ball on his chest and hit a first time volley straight into the keeper’s hands, missing out on his chance to add to his own goal tally for the game.
Distillery continued to look the stronger side right up until the 77th minute when Ards got a goal back through Carlos Djalo who headed home to put Rangers only one goal behind.
However, this did not seem to dishearten a strong Distillery team who continued their attack minded football creating more chances in the latter stages of the match including a dangerous cross into the box from Workman which forced the keeper to punch out for a corner.
In stoppage time however, Ferguson put any fears of a comeback to rest as he capitalised on a defensive mistake from Ards on the edge of their own box and slotted the ball past the keeper to get his second of the day.
A good start to the season for the Whites who face Newington FC in their first league game on Wednesday August 16.
