MATCH REPORT – Lisburn Distillery v Bourneview Mill FC
13/08/22
Irish Cup 1st Round
The Whites travelled to Pepperton Park, Portadown to take on Bourneview Mill FC in the 1st Round if the Irish Cup. The home side had finished 5th in the very competitive Mid-Ulster League – Intermediate A last season so would not be a push-over.
Manager Barry Johnston gave starting debuts to three players: Peadar McVarnock, Fra McGuinness and Aaron Smyth (returning to the team after 9 years). It was a short return as he limped off with a recurring injury to be replaced by James Morgan after only 3 minutes.
Bourneview started strongly on a very hot afternoon and virtually dominated the opening twenty minutes, forcing several corners and a couple of promising crosses that Ethan Carry dealt with comfortably. The Whites then pushed forward with a couple of good runs from McVarnock and Carson Elliott but they came to nothing.
A drinks break interrupted the Whites momentum and on the restart Bourneview had a good five-minute spell of pressure during which Justin Grattan headed away a very dangerous cross. James Morgan was booked on the half hour for pulling down a player wide on the right. McVarnock had several shots from just outside the penalty area – one pushed away by the keeper for a corner and the other blocked by a defender.
Lewis Higginson miss-kicked when in a good position after a fine move down the right. The half ended with Conal Murray surging down the left and putting in two good crosses but no-one was able to finish.
HALF-TIME Bourneview 0 Lisburn Distillery 0
The Whites momentum at the end of the first half was dashed immediately on the re-start as straight from the kick-off James Morgan was caught in possession by Harry Evans, who ran through to score easily past Carry and give the home side the lead. The goal was followed by a frantic few minutes in the Whites defence with Carry saving twice and Murray clearing a dangerous effort.
The Whites had the ball in the net after 51 minutes but Carson Elliott was off-side. Jourdan Shearer came on for Elliott a minute later. The Whites pushed forward more with Shearer in with two efforts – one blazed over the bar and the other saved from 25 yards.
The in the 64th minute Bourneview increased their lead with Jackson Nesbitt scoring low to the keeper’s right after a good right wing move. In the 69th minute a good run by McVarnock saw him force a corner which resulted in an overhead kick by Christian Irvine sailing over the bar.
After 75 minutes Carry brought a player down in the box and Nesbitt fired home the resulting penalty to make it 3-0. The Whites then brought on Jason Scott for Grattan. Carry was called upon to make a couple of good saves after the home side brought on their full quota of subs. Near the end the Whites tried to get a consolation goal but were thwarted by the home keeper.
An extremely disappointing result as the Whites exited the Irish Cup in the opening round.
