Match Report – Irish Cup 3rd Round – Shankill Utd 2 v Lisburn Distillery 4
Irish Cup third round 03/11/18
Shankill United 2 vs Lisburn Distillery 4
After an evenly shared quarter of an hour of play Distillery opened the scores in the 15th minute as Harris’ cross from the right, deep in to the box, went towards the back post, and was superbly headed in by Matthew Ferguson.
However, despite the setback, Shankill refused to lie down and levelled the game in the 34th minute as Curtis Black was played through, down the right wing and squared the ball to Anthony Crawford, who was un marked in the middle of the box and was able to tap it in.
Shorty afterwards Curtis Black beat his man at the right corner to deliver another dangerous cross towards the edge of the box where Luke Briers peeled off his defender to make his run, he received the ball and was so unlucky to see his first time strike hit the post.
It took the Whites until the second half to regain the lead, this time McMurtry played the ball through to Harris, who composed himself well and tucked the ball over the keeper in to the bottom left hand corner.
However, five minutes later, Luke Braiden received the ball on the edge of the box and took a shot first time, along the ground, in to the bottom right corner. 2-2 and all to play for.
Distillery then almost went in front for the third time in the game, in the 57th minute as Ferguson flicked the ball towards Beta, who couldn’t bring the ball down and instead improvised by going for the spectacular, adjusting his body to strike the ball mid-air on the flying, sideways volley only to see it go narrowly wide.
It didn’t take long after this however for Distillery to get their third goal, as Young drove down the left wing and cut back to give himself time to drive a cross the ball in to the box, were Beta was once again waiting to take the ball on the chest and set the ball for Ferguson who volleyed in to the left hand corner of the net.
However, it wasn’t over yet as a minute later Shankill went up the other end and hit the crossbar from a corner.
This miss nearly cost them dearly as in the 62nd minute, Paul Young crossed into the box towards Ferguson, who plucked the ball out of the air and volleyed the ball in to the side netting.
Distillery needed a fourth goal to seal the win and indeed they did manage to find the net for one last time as Harris drew the fullback, giving space for McMurtry to deliver his cross for Ferguson who headed under the keeper.
Distillery team: Nicholl, Byrne, Curran, Moore, Reid, Wright, McMurtry, Harris, Ferguson, Beta, Young Subs: Beggs, Hislop, McCaw (for Moore), Dugan (for Beta), Swann
