Linfield 6 v Lisburn Distillery 0
Premiership Champions Linfield beat the Whites 6-0 at Windsor park in the Northern Irish League Cup yesterday in a game that started promising for Distillery who performed well in the first half and certainly did not look out of place on the pitch.
McMurtry got the ball in the 6th minute of the game on the right hand side just in Linfield’s half and delivered it into the box just failing to find the head of Ferguson however a promising start to the game which showed that the Whites weren’t just going to play defensively and were there to give Linfield a game.
Jonah Nicholl had a great game for the Whites with numerous saves in both halves, his first interaction came on the 23rd minute as he palmed a Stephen Fallon shot out for a corner.
However, Linfield managed to break the deadlock in the 30th minute through Clarke when the cross from the left wing got deflected and fell in to the path of Clarke who headed home, nothing the defence could do.
The next goal for Linfield came minutes later, this time it was Clarke who got the assist as he picked out the run of Mitchell on the edge of the box who chose his spot and buried it into the back of the net to make it two.
Nicholl made another fantastic save at the start of the second half as Millar whipped the ball into the area for Clarke to head towards goal, only to be denied by the young Whites ‘keeper who tipped the ball on to the post and it was cleared away.
The third goal for Linfield came on the 60th minute as Robinson rifled a shot from just inside the Distillery half catching Nicholl off guard and sailing into the top corner of the net, a goal certain to contend for goal of the tournament.
Robinson came close minutes later with a shot from a similar distance to that of his goal just moments before, however this time Nicholl was equal to it and punched the shot out for a corner stopping a certain goal.
The remainder of the match was headlined by Louis Rooney who is a new signing for Linfield and managed to get a hat trick against Distillery yesterday on his debut. His first goal came on the 76th minute as Mitchell’s cross from the left wing fell to Rooney who found himself in the right place at the right time to tap the ball in from inside the six yard box.
Rooney then scored his second goal on the 85th as he picked it up in the box and volleyed past Nicholl and he then duly completed his hat trick two minutes later as the ball fell to him in the box again and he showed great compose to pick his spot and score the sixth and final goal of the game.
A well fought out game for the Whites that they were unfortunate not to get more out of.
