Premier Intermediate League 01/09/18
Lisburn Distillery 1 vs Newington 1
Having lost the first game of the league to Banbridge Town, it was important for Distillery to bounce back and get some points on the table and they couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game, as the referee awarded a penalty to the Whites on the 7th minute as recent signing Michael O’Hanon was brought down in the box, giving McMurtry the opportunity the slot the ball in to the back of the net giving Distillery the lead.
Distillery continued to apply pressure to Newington, coming close to scoring a second, minutes later as Harris played a corner towards the near post, where O’Hanon ran towards the ball and flicked it on to Beta’s head, but the keeper got down well to Beta’s header and the ball was able to be cleared away from danger.
However, this missed opportunity was to prove costly for Distillery, as Newington were able to equal the scores on the 30th minute, catching the Whites on the counter attack as a Distillery corner was cleared out towards Jonathan Gowdy, on the half way line, who ran with the ball to the edge of the 18 yard box before picking out Conal Burns, unmarked, in the box, who volleyed the ball past goalkeeper, Jonah Nicholl.
As the second half began, it was Distillery who looked more likely to get a second goal, coming close again on the 57th minute as Conor Corry received the ball on the half way line and switched it to the right wing were O’Hanlon was able to take it down and draw his defender out wide, before slipping a pass into McMurtry, who ran into the box to take his shot on goal, unfortunately, he was unable to hit the target, and the chance went a begging.
This missed chance almost proved costly for the Whites as minutes later, Conal Burns found his way past McMurtry, into the Distillery box, on the left side, were he chipped the ball over Nicholl, who managed to get a hand on it as it came down, pushing it in to the face of Newington striker, Kevin Hughes and over the bar, meaning that neither team were able to get another goal and the game ended in a draw.
