Match Report – Newington 0 v Lisburn Distillery 3
30/09/17 Tennent’s Irish Cup 2017/ 2018 Round 2
Newington 0 v Lisburn Distillery 3
Distillery came back from their weeks break stronger beating Newington 3-0, their second victory over the side this season having beating them earlier in the league, 4-0.
The Whites showed promise in the opening minutes as McMurtry hit the post with a thumping shot after calling for the ball to be dropped back to him outside the box.
Ferguson then missed out on a chance to put his team on top in the 28th minute when Paul Young’s cross from the right wing found his head, but he was unable to get enough power behind it to trouble the keeper.
The men in White had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock, as a defensive mistake allowed Beta to intercept the ball in the Newington box, taking it round the keeper and passing it in to the open net.
It didn’t take long after this for Distillery to come on the attack again, Newington hoped that added pressure would force the Distillery defence to make a mistake and they could steal a goal back, however, they were often left open at the back and they nearly paid the consequences on the 60th minute as Timmy Clarke led the counter attack breaking with the ball from left back and playing it through to Young who was able to cross it to the box first time, finding Ferguson unmarked who positioned himself for the volley just a few yards from goal, unfortunately he wasn’t quite able to get the volley on target and the ball went over the bar.
We didn’t have long to wait until the next goal went in however, this time for Hislop who headed home from a Paul Young corner.
Nick Beta then secured the game as a three nil victory on the 89th minute as he received the ball in the box from Workman, and picked his spot past the keeper to get his second of the game. Unfortunately, this goal game late in the game as Beta was on for the hat trick, but in his post match interview Beta was humble in victory and said that “as long as we get the win I’m happy.”
