Match Report – Newington 1 v Lisburn Distillery 2 Premier Intermediate League
Newington 1 v Lisburn Distillery 2
Bluefin Sports Premier Intermediate League
Saturday 19th January 2019 (@ Solitude)
After three consecutive defeats across league and cup Lisburn Distillery traveled to Solitude desperate to take all three points against fifth placed Newington.
After a fairly even opening period of play with both sides having some half chances the Whites first decent effort came from Jonny McCaw but his well struck effort flew high over the bar. McCaw again was involved in the next chance of note, his pass finding recent signing Josh Doyle out wide and his well driven low cross fell right to the feet of Matthew Swann but sadly on this occasion the young attackers poise left him and the ball drifted aimlessly into the hands of Newington ‘keeper Jason Craughwell.
Newington then raised their game somewhat and Gavin Taggart was unfortunate to see his well struck effort go narrowly wide.
The deadlock was eventually broken on 33 minutes when an Aaron Harris free kick from just inside the Newington half was headed downward by Joe Reid into the path of Nick Beta and the powerful striker made no mistake hammering the ball home from 12 yards out.
Newington fought back and it took a good stop from Jonah Nicholl in the Distillery goal to prevent former White Kevin Hughes from leveling the game when he found himself in space after some decent interplay.
1-0 then to Distillery at half time and that lead was soon to be doubled in the second half when, on 46 minutes, skipper Aaron Harris threaded a superb through ball to young striker Swann and he duly made up for his earlier miss by calmly lobbing the advancing Craughwell and placing the ball into the net.
The same two players duelled again on 50 minutes when Swann had another chance shortly afterwards but on this occasion he was thwarted by Craughwell who got a strong hand to his goalbound effort before the ball was cleared.
Two minutes later and the ‘Ton were back in the game when the ball broke kindly for Francis Dougan and their recent signing made no mistake drilling the ball home into the corner of the net from just inside the penalty area.
Distillery’s Jonny McCaw then found himself in the midst of the action with two chances falling his way, firstly his thunderous volley from 25 yards out dropped narrowly over the home cross bar and this was followed by a well struck free kick from a similar distance which on this occasion rippled the side netting.
As the game moved into its final stages Newington pressed hard for an equaliser their closest effort coming in the last minute of play when substitute Robert McVarnock’s effort cannoned off the Distillery post to eventual safety.
The final whistle sounded shortly after this and the Whites had secured their first three point haul of 2019, hopefully the first of many.
