Match Report- PIL – Portstewart 1 v Lisburn Distillery 1 10/11/18
10th November 2018 – Bluefin Premier Intermediate League
Portstewart 1 vs. Lisburn Distillery 1
After a somewhat uninspiring period of play Distillery eventually got the game underway scoring the first goal of the game 26 minutes in as Nick Beta’s goal bound effort was parried aside by home goalkeeper Joel Madison but only to the back post where the in-rushing Matthew Ferguson was standing waiting to tap the ball in.
However, it didn’t take long for the home side Portstewart to equalise, their goal coming in the 26th minute as Lee Forgrave received the ball on the right side of the Distillery box and he was able to play the ball to the goal scorer, Jonathan Stewart, who rocketed his shot past Whites goalkeeper, Jonah Nicholl, to make the scores one a piece.
Distillery looked to be the next of the two teams to have a promising attack towards the Portstewart goal, McMurtry lead the Whites attack in the 42nd minute as he received the ball on the right wing outside the box, his first touch was heavy, but controlled, as he tapped the ball past the defender, cutting into the box. From there his first touch drew the Portstewart full back with him, creating space for Beta to run in to and receive the backheeled pass of McMurtry however Beta’s first time pass was blocked by the Port defender and the ball fell back to Beta who chipped the ball successfully towards his target, Matthew Ferguson, who attempted a side foot volley only to see the ball go narrowly wide of the target.
The second half was tough to watch with neither side delivering the level of football they are capable of. Portstewart’s Nicky Hudson blasted high when well placed then Ferguson headed over for the Whites from Paul Young’s cross.
Towards the end the hosts missed another glorious chance with substitute Conor McKinley hitting over when well placed but ultimately on the day neither side did enough to warrant the three points with both having to settle for a point a piece.
LDFC Line up: Nicholl, Byrne, Curran, Moore, Reid, Wright, McMurtry, Harris (C), Ferguson, Young, Beta. Substitutes; Beggs, Hislop (for Beta), McCaw, Dugan (for Wright), O’Hanlon (for Curran)
