28/08/18 League Cup – Cliftonville 5 v Lis Distillery 1 – Match report
28/08/18 Bet McClean League Cup Second Round – Cliftonville 5 v Lisburn Distillery 1
Cliftonville started the stronger of the two teams opening the scoring in the 21st minute as the ball was played in to the box for Joe Gormley who was left unmarked and was able to tap the ball past goalkeeper, Jonah Nicholl, to make it one nil to the reds.
Gormley almost added to his goal scoring tally minutes later as he got played in to the box and took a shot first time, however, this time it went wide.
However, Gormley only had to wait a minute more before he got his second goal of the game, this time he was in the right place at the right time, as Jay Donnelly’s shot was well saved by Nicholl, but parried out only as far as star striker Gormley who headed into the net.
It wasn’t long until Jay Donnelly also found the back of the net, getting Cliftonville’s third goal just before the first half came to a close. Donnelly ran on to a through ball in to the box and composed himself well to find the back of the net.
We only had to wait a few minutes into the second half for Cliftonville to get their fourth in the game, as McConnell picked the ball up on the edge of the Distillery box, before curling a shot past the outstretched hand of Nicholl, who was unable to prevent the ball from turning in to the top right corner of the net. Despite the score line the Whites were producing a positive performance but, as you would expect from a Premiership side, the Reds finishing was lethal.
Maguire came close to sealing the deal for the reds as he beat his man on the right side of the Distillery box and his effort on goal rattled against the outside of the right post preventing him from getting on the score sheet.
Distillery got their first big chance of the game on the 74th minute as Harris picked out Ferguson who ran on to his ball in to the box and his chance was saved by the keeper, but, fell back out to Ferguson, who tried to chip the keeper, but his second effort floated over the bar.
It was substitute, Francis Dugan, who got Distillery’s only goal of the game a minute later, striking the ball from the right side of the box past Cliftonville keeper Neeson, however it was apparent that this was merely a consolation goal as the Reds were able to squeeze in a fifth and final goal before the referee blew the whistle for the final time. Cliftonville’s final goal coming from McMenamin as Nicholl miskicked his clearance on the edge of the Distillery box and the sliced clearance fell to McMenamin on the edge who was able to turn Nicholl before chipping the ball over him to seal the victory for his team.
